Be on time and ready for class.
Treat every person & item with respect.
Always strive for musical excellence.
Keep a positive outlook.
Create a family-like atmosphere in the band room.
Failure to uphold our principles will result in the following consequences in this order:
Verbal warning
One-on-one conversation with teacher
Phone call home
Conference with student, guardian(s), and teacher
Referral to School Disciplinary Office
When you enter the band room, please follow the steps below:
Prepare yourself for a focused rehearsal session by entering the room quietly & courteously.
Cell phones will not be utilized during band. Cell phones should be placed in the "device den" at the start of class per district policy.
Large Instruments (trombone, euphonium, french horn, all saxophones) - Set up your instrument near your instrument storage space. After you set up your instrument, put your case back in storage.
Small Instruments - (flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet) Set up your instrument at your seat. Keep your case under your chair during class.
After assembling your instrument, sit down in your assigned seat, situate your stand, music, and supplies, and read the agenda on the white board or projector screen.
Begin playing warm-ups on your own.
When the director steps on the podium, stop playing.
During rehearsal, do your best to stay in your seat. Only get up to move around the room if absolutely necessary.
At the end of class, please make sure your chair is replaced neatly in the row. Push your stand down all of the way, and take everything with you, including garbage, pencils, and water bottles.
The band room and music facilities of Yorkville Middle School showcase how much our school district supports our band program. It is each person’s responsibility to treat the equipment, instruments, and music facilities with respect and pride. Please help keep our band room looking its best!
Keep your instrument, music, and other band supplies in your assigned band locker or storage space.
Do not touch the percussion equipment if you are not a percussionist.
Please treat all equipment with care, including the music stands, chairs, ect.
Clean up any spills or puddles immediately when they occur.
Do not eat or drink anything other than water in our music rooms.
You will be assigned a band locker to safely store your instrument. Musical instruments should not be stored in the hallway lockers near core classrooms. Most of our lockers can house more than one instrument. You will share a band locker with other students, so please treat your locker as a shared space.
In the mornings when you arrive at school, stop by the band room immediately to store your instrument and band binder.
Store only your instrument, music, and band supplies in your band locker.
Music and band books should be kept in your 3-ring binder, NOT loose or stuffed in your instrument case.
Keep your band locker tidy at all times. Do not keep loose sheets of paper in your band locker.
If you violate the locker policies, you may lose your band locker privileges.
YMS band members wear what professional musicians refer to as "concert black" for our performances.
Concert black attire is formal and conservative in nature. The purpose is to draw attention to the performers' artistry and professionalism instead of their individual appearances.
Here is a wonderful example of middle schoolers in concert black attire:
Tops:
Concert black tops should cover the performer's shoulders and have a modest and comfortable neckline. Blouses, button-up collared dress shirts (tucked in and with a black belt), black camisole and cardigan sets, blazers, and black ties are all appropriate options. Please do not wear polos, T-shirts, sweatshirts, or hoodies, as those are considered leisure wear.
Bottoms:
Concert black bottoms should cover the performer's legs to the floor. Dress pants/slacks or floor length skirts/dresses are recommended. Please refrain from wearing athletic leggings, black jeans, sweat pants, shorts, or short skirts.
Footwear:
Concert black footwear should be dressy. Black dress shoes, ballet flats, dressy black boots, and pumps are all appropriate choices. Please avoid athletic shoes, water shoes, or flip flops. Please wear solid black nylons, tights, or socks that cover your ankle completely when seated.
