An essential question that will be discussed throughout this novel is: Why haven't all races experienced the same liberties and rights? We will discuss this issue as well as understand the consequences of segregation and racism as it pertains to the story as well as the beginning of the civil rights movement. Students will be able to determine how the mistreatment of one group of people affected an entire society. In addition, students will examine the human condition of discrimination and how no one is immune to it once society tolerates it for one group.
