Volume 1

Take a look at what we have been doing in our class!

Dear families,

We have recently finished the first marking period of Life Science. I am proud of all that your students have discovered. They have learned about everything from the characteristics of living things and how we classify organisms, to plant and animal cells, and finally cell's structures and functions.

Students worked hard and used their creativity and knowledge to complete the creature feature project. This project showed what they learned about the characteristics of life in an imaginative way.

In October we completed our Classification unit. Students discovered how organisms are grouped based on similar characteristics, and how we name use the genus and species to give organisms a scientific name. We learned about the 6 kingdoms and what specific characteristics each of those kingdoms have.

We then learned how to use the microscope and how the microscope led us to discovering cells and developing the cell theory. We analyzed a plant and animal cell under the microscope to compare them and determined that the plant cell has a cell wall and chloroplasts while an animal cell does not. Lastly we discovered all the jobs of the organelles and how they work together to allow cells to function as the smallest unit of life.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Schama

Here are some of the exciting things we have done since the beginning of the year!

Safety posters

Students used collaboration and creativity to design safety posters depicting some of the science room safety rules.

Glow stick Lab

Students completed an experiment to learn about controlled experiments and determine if glow sticks are worth buying in Hawaii.

Is the seed alive? Lab

Students learned about the characteristics of life by completing an experiment to determine if a seed is alive.

Stimulus Vs. Response Lab

Students investigating how our pupil reacts to light.

Creature Feature Projects

Students used their imaginations and knowledge about the characteristics of life to create essays and pictures about a fictitious organism that had all 6 characteristics of life.

Dichotomous Key Lab

Students used pictures to observe animal characteristics and create a Dichotomous Key.

Coming Up!

As we start the second marking period we will embark on our Cellular processes unit. Students will begin with how material is moved in the cell then photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

In January, we will be moving on to our Cell cycle unit where, students will learn about Mitosis.

Finally at the end of the marking period, we will begin our Body systems unit, where students will learn about the body systems of the earthworm and frog.
