THIS COURSE IS A PROJECT BASED IN DEPTH STUDY OF ARCHITECTURAL STYLES AND PERIODS. SPECIFIC DESIGN PROJECTS WILL BE BASED ON FAMOUS ARCHITECTS STYLES OR HISTORICAL PERIODS OF STYLE

WE WILL BEGIN BY EXPLORING EARLY HISTORIC PERIODS AS WELL AS MODERN DAY ARCHITECTURE.

WE WILL LEARN ABOUT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT AND NORMAN FOSTER AMOUNG OTHER IMPORTANT ARCHITECTS. OUR PROJECTS WILL BE CONCENTRATIONS ON THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN WHILE WE DESIGN USEFUL REAL LIFE PROJECTS FOR CLIENTS. PROJECTS INCLUDE:

HISTORICAL PERIODS AND AMERICAN HOUSING STYLES. WHAT DO YOU LIVE IN?

HISTORICAL PERIODS OF ARCHITECTURE AND FAMOUS ARCHITECTS AND THEIR WORK.

A 3 DIMENSIONAL LANDSCAPE FORM WITH MODEL HOME BASED ON FLW'S ORGANIC ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

A DORM ROOM REDESIGN - CONCENTRATING ON SPACE AND BALANCE TO BE DESIGNED IN AN ASSIGNED HISTORICAL PERIOD.

A PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM - CONCENTRATING ON PROPORTION AND SCALE. THIS IS A COLLABORATION WITH THE FUTURE EDUCATORS CLASS.

FINAL PROJECT IS A DESIGN OF A LARGE PUBLIC SPACE IN YOUR TOWN THAT NEEDS HELP - REDESIGNED TO BETTER SERVE THE PUBLIC.

WE WILL HAVE SKYPE CALLS WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM FALLINGWATER, A LANDMARK HOUSE DESIGNED BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT.

WE WILL HAVE SKYPE CALLS WITH O'HARE-D'JAFER- A LONDON BASED DESIGN FIRM.

ARCHITECTURAL DICTIONARY ASSIGNMENT

USE THE ASSIGNMENT SHEET HANDED OUT IN CLASS.

ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE LONG TERM ASSIGNMENT - 2ND AND 3RD MARKING PERIOD

Design a land formation that can be the building site for your house.

SALT FLOUR DOUGH

Make your dough at home using the recipe link above.

Create your land formation on the plywood boards given out in class. Paint your land as water, grass, trees, etc...

House design-

Design the floorplan of your house in actual scale to your land formation. Use graph paper and rulers.

Design each wall elevation starting with the FACADE of your house.

THE FACADE ELEVATION WILL COUNT AS YOUR 2ND QUARTER EXAM GRADE.

ASSIGNMENT- SKETCH THE FRONT ELEVATION IN 1/2 INCH = 1 FOOT SCALE. USE WATERCOLOR PAPER AND PAINT THE DESIGN SHOWING ALL TEXTURES, MATERIALS, COLORS AND DETAILS INCLUDING LANDSCAPING SURROUNDING THE FRONT FACADE.

YOU WILL HAVE THREE CLASS PERIODS TO COMPLETE THIS WORK. THE ASSIGNMENT IS DUE ON MONDAY JAN. 19TH THE DAY OF THE EXAM.

CONTINUE WITH THE REMAINING WALL ELEVATIONS OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOUSE- front wall, back wall, each side wall. Remember when creating elevations the scale is 1/2 INCH square equals 1 foot.

WE will use foam core board to cut out the walls and roof of the house.

Cut out your floor first .Attach your floor to the landmass using supports as needed. Bring in wooden dowels or other support materials.

Cut out your front facade wall next.

Cut out your back wall.

Cut out your two side walls.

Assemble all walls together. Attach the house to the floor.

Create roof so that it is removable.

Create Word documents of all siding textures and roofing textures. Create a full page of the texture. Print out as many sheets of your texture as you need.

Attach the textures to the sides, floor, roof and any outside areas that need flooring, siding , etc....

Create a typed label for your model including the name of the property ( give it a creative name) the location of the property and all materials used to create the house.

3RD MARKING PERIOD-

DESIGN THE INTERIOR OF EACH OR 4 ROOMS USING A DIFFERENT MODERN ARCHITECT AS INSPIRATION FOR YOUR CHOICES.

STEP ONE- A BIOGRAPHY OF EACH ARCHITECT YOU CHOSE.

STEP TWO- ROOM FLOORPLAN

STEP THREE- AT LEAST TWO WALL ELEVATIONS OF THE ROOM PAINTED OR MARKER IN FULL COLOR.

STEP FOUR- ALL SWATCHES OF FABRICS AND FLOORING CHOICES, COLOR CHIPS, PHOTOS OF ALL CHOICES FOR FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES

ALL STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A CHOICE OF DORM ROOMS FROM TCNJ. ALL ROOMS ARE DOUBLE OCCUPANCY.

STUDENTS SELECT FROM A HAT ONE HISTORICAL PERIOD TO USE FOR THE DESIGN OF THIER ROOM .

REQUIREMENTS - ALL ITEMS INSIDE THE PICNIC BASKET MUST BE INCLUDED IN ALL DESIGNS.

THIS PROJECT IS ALSO TO BE USED FOR YOUR EXAM. COMPLETE THE BOARD BEFORE THE FINAL EXAM PERIOD. YOU WILL PRESENT YOUR BOARD AND YOUR PHOTOS TO THE CLASS AS YOUR FINAL EXAM GRADE.

As you know, ____________is our trip to the High Line! Here are some reminders for the trip:


- Meet at the front of the school between 7:45-7:55AM (DON'T BE LATE PLEASE!)

- Bring water, a sketchbook( optional. I will have clipboards and paper ), a mechanical pencil ( optional- I will have wooden pencils), a ruler (optional), and a snack in a SMALL backpack/bag. I will have some extra sketching supplies if necessary, so don't buy anything you don't already have.

- Wear comfortable shoes and a comfortable outfit! Maybe bring something to sit on ? old t shirt or small towel.

- Bring at least $15-20 for lunch. Hopefully you don't need it all but NYC is expensive.

- Bathrooms in NYC are limited. Please remember to go to the bathroom before the trip and don't drink too much coffee/tea beforehand.

The itinerary includes walking and sketching along the High Line and stopping at Chelsea Market for lunch. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out via email. lesley.fowks@wwrsd.org
