Ways to pay for college

Subsidized Loan

A type of loan does not require the borrower to pay interest but rather has the interest paid by a third party. There are many types of subsidized loans including mortgage loans and student loans. Any individual or entity can subsidize a loan including the federal or local governments and charitable organizations.

Unsubsidized Loan

A loan in which interest is applied as soon as money is dispersed to a borrower. With an unsubsidized loan, the borrower will be charged interest on top of interest that has already accrued on the account.

Grants

Student grants are free monetary gifts to people who are pursuing higher education. Unlike student loans, grants do not require repayment. Student grants also differ from scholarships, which are usually given to and by specific groups of people for a specific line of study and often require students to have exceptional grades.

Scholarships

A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarship money is not required to be repaid. Scholarships are a major component of college financial aid.
