Blade of Fatality is our first-ever original musical written by our English Drama Club members. The cast consisting of mainly junior form students spent over three months on the production of the 30-minute performance garnering a number of awards at Hong Kong School Drama Festival 2023/24 and EMI Drama Fest.
Celebrating Students’ Excellence at the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival
Our school’s active participation in the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival (English Section) was truly remarkable, with 254 students showcasing their talents and dedication, reaching a marvellous merit percentage of 84%.
To engage students in an English-speaking environment, our English Department hosted diverse festive celebrations throughout the year, ranging from Halloween Fun Day to Christmas Game Booths and Easter Egg Hunt. Our students well immersed themselves in the joyous atmosphere.
Our lunchtime activities were educational and fun as usual.
Inter-Class Debate Competitions: A Showcase of Eloquence and Critical Thinking
Around eight inter-class debate competitions were successfully held in the 2023-2024 academic year. Thanks to the intriguing motions suggested by our English teachers, our students approached these topics creatively and enthusiastically, and the lively discussions cultivated a vibrant EMI environment within our school community.
Notably, these debates not only enhanced students’ confidence in public speaking, but they also nurtured talents proficient in the ‘5 Cs’ of 21st century skills—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and civic awareness. Sharing the same vision as these inter-class friendly matches, our English Debate Team has dedicated itself to equipping debaters with the power of oratory and eloquence. Congratulations to three of our Form Five debaters winning the 2nd Runner-up in the “UNSDGs Debating Competition 2023/24” organized by UNESCO Hong Kong Association!
Inter-class English Riddle Competition
The opportunity for our students to solve riddles in teams promoted collaboration, provoked laughter and fostered a love for English that transcends the traditional classroom.
To arouse students’ interest in learning English and to boost their confidence in using the language, different games were designed this year, such as running dictation, spelling bee, sentence matching, tableau, to name but a few. Games provide opportunities for students to practise the four language skills in a relaxing and enjoyable setting. Such experimentation with language in meaningful contexts helps drive home the message that language is a tool for communication and collaboration in achieving the goal of the task at hand.
For instance, in the posing game of tableau, the actors together work out a concept and create a picture of what is happening at one particular frozen moment. Making use of the language in the preparation stage and then merely physical poses, gestures and facial expressions in the game stage, students were captivated by this quiet excitement.
