Two Books, One School

The Downtown School 2021-2022

What Is "Two Books, One School"?

"Two Books, One School" (aka TBOS) is our schoolwide read program to bring together the DTS community around a shared book(s) experience! The goal of this event is to build our collective love of reading and strengthen the bonds of our community.

Since DTS spans a wide age range, our curriculum committee has selected two books with overlapping themes:

Some of the themes explored in both books are the meanings of family and community; the pain and growth experiences that come through life changes; and perseverance and believing in yourself. We are excited to explore these themes as we read together!

FAQs

Q: Do we need to buy a book?

A: No, thanks to the generosity of our PTA and the success of our TBOS t-shirt fundraiser last year, we are able to provide a free copy of the schoolwide read book to every K-8 student and teacher.

Q: Are students/families required to read the book?

A: No, participation in the schoolwide read is optional but highly encouraged! Teachers will be using the schoolwide read books for enrichment activities in their classrooms, and we have planned various fun contests and programs as part of TBOS that we hope will excited our students! The goal of TBOS is to inspire further love of reading for reading's sake.

Q: My child is not able to read their book independently and finding time to read together is challenging for our family. Will teachers be reading the book aloud in class?

A: Teachers may choose to read portions of the schoolwide read book aloud in class, and you can also find links to staff members reading aloud under the "Read-Aloud Recordings" tab on this web site. Please utilize those recordings as often as needed to help supplement your family reading time!
