Remote Learning FAQs

The purpose of this notice is to explain how remote learning will work for West Side Collaborative students. Please review this information very carefully and discuss its contents with your child.

The first thing we need all students to do is be sure they are connected to all their classes on Google!

To do so students should:

  • Go to

  • Click on “join” on the top right of the screen

  • Enter the appropriate class code

  • Join the class

Teachers have already sent class codes and information on how to connect to classes via email.

Parents/guardians should be sure to have connected to the following classes:

  • Math

  • Science

  • ELA

  • Social Studies

  • Art

  • Physical Education

  • Homeroom/Basecamp

If you are not connected to your child’s classes, please email your child’s teachers.

Students will be expected log into the classroom by joining their live virtual zoom classes on days they are working remotely. Zoom classes will consist of live instruction, break-out rooms and time to work on assignments and get teacher feedback.

Students are required to complete assignments for core-content classes (Monday through Friday) and weekly for enrichment classes. These assignments will be graded by teachers and scores will be entered into google classroom. Students will be required to earn a minimum grade for each assignment. Assignments can be re-done until students earn the minimum grade. This important change is designed to ensure students are re-learning material they are challenged with.

Do I have to check in at a specific time each day?

Yes! 6th grade homeroom begins at 8:40am and 7th and 8th grade homerooms begin at 8:50am. Student schedules are posted in their Google Classroom Homeroom. Please check the Google Classroom for updates and additional information.

How can I get help from teachers if I need it?

Teachers will be conducting office hours each day from 2:10-2:40pm for 6th grade, and 2:20-2:50pm for 7th and 8th grades. Students and parents may also email teachers directly or send messages through the google classroom.

How can I see how my child is doing with their classes?

Google Classroom is still the system parents/guardians should use to track student performance. Students will have their grades tracked on this system.

I am in a class where I receive support from a 2nd teacher. How will I receive that support during the Remote Learning period?

All WSC staff has transitioned to remote learning and students are being supported by their 2nd teacher. Students benefiting from this support have been contacted by their teachers. Please contact Ms. Rodriguez with questions or concerns, at or 646-481-1677.

Do students have to check in for daily attendance?

Attendance is taken in each live and zoom class every day.

How should I contact the school during this Remote Learning period?

Your child's teachers should be the first people to contact with questions. Teachers will direct parents to other staff members for assistance as needed. Email is the best way to get in contact with school staff. All email addresses can be found in the Staff Directory on our website

I am still in need of a laptop/iPad or internet service. How can I get technology support?

  • For more information on providers offering free home WiFi, please click here.

  • If you borrowed a laptop from school and it is not working properly reach out to Mr. Kuang at

  • If you need to borrow a laptop, or have questions about access to technological devices, please reach out to Ms. Rodriguez at or 646-481-1677.

What happens if I submit work late?

Students will be penalized eventually for failure to submit assigned work, but we are allowing for a grace period as we make this enormous transition. Remember, our goal is for our students to be engaged in productive work each school day.

I still have questions, who should I contact?

Our parent coordinator, Ms. Rodriguez, is still your main point of contact. She can be reached at or 646-481-1677 if you have further questions.
