This was my first sketch for my map, I just did a grey box in paint 3D for a general layout of the first level, I changed some of this but I kept it relatively true to the grey box. The map I am using was actually supposed to be a grey boxed map but then instead I liked how it was turning out and the simplistic yet kind of pretty nature I got from it I found perfectly incapsulated my game and I ditched using the map as a grey box and decided to use the grey boxed map as the main map, with little tweaks every now and then.

Each level is done in segments to signify a stage in the persons head, I decided to convey to the player that you're entering a memory world by having them look at themselves drink and then look into a mirror and enter their memories, using static to further push the uncertainty and make the player slightly more uncomfortable
This is a gameplay video I made for my questionnaire as it was hard to get people to play my game so I added it online on discord and Reddit to share with other people, they watched the video and then answered the questionnaire questions
The first two levels are the introduction to the story and the beginning to the grief. The dialogue that would be here is the son saying he his late for the first one but then he is late again for the second one but this time he was too late as he wasn't there for her death.
This is the last level before you enter your mind and start going through the stages of grief, in this level the character is dealing with his grief by trying to suppress them by drinking, but when you walk into the mirror you enter your head and start going through the stages.
In this stage you are reminiscing on the happier memories where you are trying to deny it happened by looking at memories where she is still alive. I made the tv static to show their mental state being fuzzy and to show that their mind has started to forget memories and only holds certain pieces, allowing the player and the character to only focus on the memory with the mother.
In this stage you are going through anger and depression and it also shows your memory is starting to lose happy memories and now has the character trapped in the bad memories. The anger emotion is conveyed by the argument that is happening in this memory and the depression is after the memory segment ends where the character apologizes to his mother. The fire also symbolizes the anger and pain.
A dark small corridor to show how the character is being claustrophobic in his head and to show the mental toll it takes on them as everything begins to close in and surrounding them with these memories or lack there of also with the red light at the end giving this a more ominous effect. This translates well to the next scene
Finally exiting the dark small corridor you see the same hospital room where you failed to say your last goodbyes destroyed and shrouded in red with your mother at the end of a long corridor staring you down, telling you to face your pain as you begin your descent into the darkness towards her.
Endings only.mp4To conclude the game I added two different endings, one of which is your character making peace with the passing and keeping the memories but as good ones, being grateful for their last moments with their mother. The other ending is them continuously walking towards their sadder darker memory of their mother which has them just fall into the abyss of darkness and have an end screen appear to show that since you didn't face your issues and pain, you get engulfed in it, like your last memory of your mother.
