CHARACTERS
CHARACTERS
These were my first designs which as you can see did not turn out that well, especially the one on the right. The one on my left is the closest to my art style and could've worked in my game but I was more dedicated into getting a character I'm proud of, A character that could fit better. These were my proper first tries at designing a whole person, I worked on other characters before but I used preexisting character models and just edited them to create a newer model. The one on my right was too smooth and high poly and any tools I used to make it have less polys would result in the character looking wonky. The character on the left was more of a freestyle but I think it works well.
This was my final design for my character. I watched quite a few tutorials online of how to create different low poly models in Maya and the best advice I was given from those was to use a reference image, which you can put behind and on the side of the character and use the camera angles to make the character shaped like the reference image. I used that but I then edited the character in some ways like with the face, feet, arm and chest. I then used Maya to UV it as well, I grabbed certain parts of the characters body UV and designed a gradient which I then put onto the character so that they weren't too dull but not too colourful either, I needed a middle ground between not being a singular colour but also not to leave my designated style, so using the same colours as the world but making them gradient worked perfectly for encapsulating my character.
