What is Monster Phonics?

Monster Phonics is a whole-class Systematic Synthetic Phonics Scheme for children in Reception and Key Stage 1. It is also used as an intervention in Key Stages 1 and 2.

It teaches children to read by enabling them to identify the individual graphemes (letter combinations) and blend the sounds (phonemes) together to read words.

Sounds are categorised into ten colour groups, and each colour has a corresponding monster character.

How is it taught?

1. We introduce each lesson with an engaging PowerPoint. The monsters bring phonics to life and colour-coding makes it easy to teach each grapheme.

2.Every lesson then has either an animation or a story. Each animation has a song and is set within the monsters’ world.

3.Each lesson will be followed up with a focused and purposeful multi-sensory activity.
