The Spanish Club at Wright City High School is an extracurricular organization facilitated by Spanish language teacher Julie Hernandez. The club meets weekly on Thursdays after school and provides students with opportunities to engage with the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in an interactive, community-focused environment. During these meetings, participants discuss upcoming fundraising projects, take part in culturally relevant activities, and practice developing their Spanish language proficiency.
One of the club’s most anticipated traditions is the annual Spanish Club Fiesta Night. To support this event, members organize and host a 3v3 soccer tournament each year, which functions as the club’s primary fundraising initiative. Fiesta Night itself features a variety of cultural experiences, including Spanish-language music, traditional Mexican foods and beverages, and an assortment of games and activities designed to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
Among these activities, the jalapeño-eating contest stands out as a crowd favorite.
“I competed in the jalapeño eating contest last year, and it’s always the highlight of Fiesta Night,” said senior Brenna Plunkett.
During this event, students line up to test their tolerance for spicy foods by eating as many jalapeños as they can. The contest not only offers entertainment but also serves as a nod to culinary traditions within Mexican culture.
Through its meetings, events, and annual traditions, the Spanish Club fosters cultural appreciation, language development, and student engagement. The organization continues to serve as a meaningful space for students to explore and celebrate the diverse traditions of the Spanish-speaking world.
