Wright City High School officially started its school year with a back-to-school assembly on Friday, Aug. 29, at the brand new America’s Heartland Stadium!
“We were very excited to play on the new field, and the assembly had water, so everyone had fun,” said Whitney Schuenemeyer, Wright City High School Student Council Sponsor.
The assembly started off strong with the Wright City drumline playing tunes to get the student body energized for the start of their first assembly.
The cheer seniors were then honored before the team went into their carefully choreographed routine.
The band director, Jessica Colvin, also made an appearance to announce and honor the seniors for band and state competitors.
Football coach, Tyler Rickard, as well as the softball and track coach, Fredrick Ross, celebrated their seniors and all of their accomplishments from last fall, as well as over the summer months. The boys' soccer team also honored their two seniors.
“I’m very thankful and honored to be recognized by my peers and faculty,” said Terrence Love, a senior in Soccer and Football.
Then, math teacher Brandon Stumpf braved the cold by getting dunked in ice water to help fundraise money for SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) to host and raise awareness during informative events over Red Ribbon Week and Pre-Prom week.
“Getting the water dunked on me was refreshing because it was really hot outside,” said Stumpf.
Officers from all CTO’s including HOSA, FBLA, and EDRising, got a chance to honor those who went to state and nationals. HOSA even honored their four internationally ranking students!
The student classes participated in many fun activities and games, with the senior class winning the majority, and the junior class following closely behind.
The games consisted of red light, green light, where a group of students from each grade volunteered to run the width of the football field. The following game was the sports relay, where competitors had to go through all the fall sports like Volleyball, Football, Golf, Softball, and Soccer. Then, students participated in a bucket relay. Next, each class sent out a group of kids to the middle of the field, tied balloons around their legs, and tried to stomp the other person's balloon without getting their own balloon popped. The last game was the water balloon relay, where each class got its own hula-hoop and tried to collect water balloons from the middle and put them safely in their hula hoops.
The water bucket relay ended in a splash when Ross dumped the senior class's water bucket on their class sponsor, Hannah Pohl.
The assembly concluded with sponsor and teacher, Whitney Schunemeyer, giving a closing statement, reminding students of their upcoming homecoming dance on Sept. 18, as well as getting the crowd hype to start communicating with their class sponsors to start creating their floats for the annual homecoming parade.
