Wright City West Elementary School hosted a special breakfast event on a Saturday morning in April to celebrate grandparents. Students and faculty welcomed grandparents with an assortment of breakfast foods, including orange juice, coffee, sausage, and pancakes.
Sarah Smith, an elementary school counselor, and Anne Juden, a parent, created the event.
"We came up with this to give grandparents more time to enjoy their child's school and time together as a community," Juden said. "I wanted it to be a free event to show some community outreach and kindness towards the special people in our student's lives."
Kohl Foods donated the pre-made pancakes, while Ginghams and PTC members also contributed to the event. Volunteers included high school students and members of the Parent Teacher Committee. The breakfast coincided with the school's annual book fair, providing an additional draw for attendees and an alternative way to include students who may not have been able to bring a grandparent.
During the event, families could take photos in front of a banner or sit together at the cafeteria tables to enjoy their meal. The PTC committee estimates that approximately 400 community members were served during the breakfast, and they hope to continue the event in future years.
