The Wright City High School golf team is undergoing significant changes this season, with new players and a new head coach taking the helm. Two of the five varsity players, Devin Myers and Landon Visico, seniors, are competing for the first time, bringing fresh talent to the team.
In an interview with the new head coach, Douglas Smith, he discussed the challenges he has faced so far.
"Trying to help players with established habits and who haven't played a lot of golf has been a key issue," said Smith.
However, he also noted that despite the team's inexperience, they have made substantial progress in the short season.
"Scoring averages are dropping, which is good, and we're having fun, which is better," added Smith.
When asked about the qualities he looks for in a great golfer, Smith emphasized the importance of understanding golf as a lifetime sport and the dedication required to improve.
"An understanding that the game is full of ups and downs is vital, as is having a mindset that the next shot is the most important.”
Varsity golfer Devin Myers also shared his thoughts on the team's progress.
"The team has been progressing well so far, and a lot of people are growing and getting better," said Myers, expressing his excitement for the rest of the season and the team's potential for growth.
According to Coach Smith, the Wright City golf team has improved with each meet and is getting closer to reaching their full potential.
