The Wright City High School Speech and Drama Club has been making a significant impact this year. Following their recent play, the club agreed to perform for East and West Elementary schools, encouraging students to read their newest schoolwide book, "Zoey and Sassafras" by Asia Citro.
A group of high school students volunteered to perform two short skits for children in grades K-5.Â
Karson McCory led the first skit with S. Keown, E. Cox, V. Bollenbach, and E. Dietrich. The skit focused on the different creatures within Zoey's journal's forest, such as the Jazzerfly and Ghostdeer. It aimed to portray the potential companionship between creatures in similar habitats.
R. Requat led the second skit with K. Jensen, S. Zilafro, and P. Patterson. The skit was presented as a cooking show, with host Requat welcoming the young scientist Zoey to explain the dietary needs of her mythical creatures. Students learned the difference between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores with the help of a swamp monster and a French-speaking goat.
At West Elementary, the theater group's director, Brian Burgoyne, encouraged student interaction by asking them about their favorite real and fictional animals. S.Mir and B. Padgett led this interactive activity at East Elementary, adding the question, "What do you think you would feed these creatures?"
The elementary students were excited to see the high schoolers and explore the fantastical world of creatures, and they felt encouraged to read and learn more.
