April celebrates National Assistant Principal Week by recognizing the four outstanding assistant principals. Wright City R-II School District celebrates its four exceptional principals from the elementary, middle, and two elementary schools.
Devin Raney is the high school assistant principal, Sara Meadows is the middle school assistant principal, and Erin Hammel and Angela Woodson are the assistant principals for West and East Elementary schools, respectively.
In an interview, Raney shared insights into his typical day as an assistant principal.
"Every day is different," he said. "I usually arrive at 6:30. Then I start with my agenda. I get my coffee and greet everybody, ensuring every kid feels welcome. My meetings usually start at 8. After that, I observe classrooms and handle any pressing issues that week, such as dances or professional development days. I supervise lunch daily, ensuring everybody is good, and after lunch, I deal with discipline, referrals, and suspensions."
Raney revealed that he did not always aspire to be an assistant principal, initially wanting to be a teacher. However, he started considering pursuing his master's degree and exploring how he could affect the school on a different level.
Raney explained his motivation to become an assistant principal: "I wanted to expand and interact with everyone. I wanted to get more involved with everyone. I know every kid in the school now."
Reflecting on his job's best part, Raney said, "There is a lot. I like that every day is different, so I don't get stuck in ruts. Some days will be hard with a lot to do, and others will be a breeze. I like to work and interact with all the different people; there are a lot of really smart and interesting people, such as yourself. I don't have bad days."
Looking to the future, Raney sees himself running his own building within the district in the next ten years, with aspirations of becoming a principal.
He added, "Who knows, maybe after being a principal, I might want to move to the central office and be a superintendent or something."
