Website
Create a history portfolio website which will be marked as half of your Term 1 history grade. Create 4 pages: Slavery in the New World; Confederation; Louis Riel; Klondike.
For each page (category) you will create a sub-page for each of the activities within the category.
Be reflective!
Be creative!

Watch this video about slave ships. This ship is called "L'Aurore" which was a French ship bound for what is now Haiti.
Write a reflection based on NOTICE, WONDER, and FEEL as described above.
Which artifacts really stood out to you?
Spend time looking carefully at each item and read through the captions. Select a few artifacts, share the photo, provide a brief description of the artifact, then provide some personal reflections.
Make sure you have watched the Harriet Tubman Video (scroll down near the bottom).
Watch this video which is the trailer for the movie "Harriet".

Read through these biographies. Choose one person from the list that you found inspiring.
In your own words, provide a brief overview of their life.
Reflect on this person: what really stood out to you? What questions would you ask them if you could go back and interview them? How does this person inspire you?
Imagine what it would be like to be running for your life?
How would you feel as a citizen in the free states reading these ads?
If you were an abolitionist, what could you do?
Your final entry on the "Slavery in the New World" page on your website, connect what you learned in this section with what is currently going on in the world today. Consider:
What effects does slavery still have today in both America and in Canada?
How is power abused today? Think about how power is abused in the world, in Canada, and even experiences in your own life.
This reflection should be approximately 250 words. Consider 3 specific examples (or conclusions) and explain your thoughts and feelings. What did you learn about humanity? Power? Greed? Progress?
Provide a summary of the information you individually researched for the group presentation to the class.
This can be in paragraphs with some jot notes; HOWEVER, you should generally be using your own words and not simply "copy and paste".
Use images and/or diagrams.
Insert your group Google Slides

Pictures can be used to convey messages and meanings, and they can be more powerful than words. Newspapers publish cartoons of politicians that challenge the politician’s behaviours and beliefs, and that get across the cartoonist’s point of view about the politician.
Cartoonists use five main elements to convey their point of view:
symbolism - using an object to stand for an idea
captioning and labels - used for clarity and emphasis
analogy - a comparison between two unlike things that share some characteristics
irony - the difference between the way things are and the way things should be or the way things are expected to be
exaggeration - overstating or magnifying a problem or a physical feature or habit: big nose, bushy eyebrows, large ears, baldness
Now, browse through the political cartoons from recent times as well as Sir John A Macdonald Cartoons.
TASK: Choose 1 of the 2 options:
Draw your own political cartoon that speaks a message about either today or during the time of Confederation. Follow the 5 elements cartoonists use to convey their point of view (as shown above). Take a photo or scan your cartoon into your portfolio website.
OR
Choose any political cartoon not discussed in class. Make a copy of THIS DOCUMENT, complete the questions, and upload it and the cartoon to your portfolio.
