KCI’s varsity boys hockey team went head-to-head against Grand River Collegiate, and the outcome was nasty.
As the buzzer rang to commence the first period, both teams battled back and forth for the puck. Right away, Grand River showed their dominance on the ice by being aggressive. Grand River player San Singh (#21) body-checked KCI player Cole O’Donnell (#14) to the floor. Earning a rowdy reaction from players on the bench. As tension grew and aggression persisted, Grand River received the first penalty of the game from Cole Hunsberger (#7) for tripping, earning him two minutes in the box. As time ran out and the scoreboard showed no progression from both teams, Grand and KCI continued an unspoken battle of dominance and violence, body-checking each other at any opportunity. All in all, no goals were scored during the first period.
One minute into the second period, taking the lead, Grand River player Evan Wallace (#28), assisted by Cole Hunsberger (#7), scored the first goal of the game. Grand River resumed their violent tendencies as Jake Johnston (#20) body-checked KCI player Declan Uniac to the ground, creating a pile of bodies tripping over each other on the ice. Shortly after, Grand River player Logan Young (#24), assisted by Cole Hunsberger (#7), scored the second goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-0 for Grande River Collegiate. As the tension grew, frustration was rising in KCI player Mike Ball (#66) as a fight broke out between him and Grand River player, Evan Wallace (#28), which earned them both two minutes in the box for rough housing. Opposite each other, both players continued to verbally taunt each other. “If you can’t f–cking take it, don't play,” yelled Evan Wallace as Mike Ball made fun of his “big a– forehead.” Making a slight comeback, Cole O’Donnell (#14) scored the first goal for KCI, assisted by Ethan Wasylyshyn, giving our school some hope. Soon enough, Grand and KCI played a battle of goals. Grand scored at 3:02 from Brayden Beaston (#36), assisted by Ronan Mash (#9) and Jake Johnston (#20), followed by a KCI goal one minute later by Cole O’Donnell (#14), assisted by Will Shantz (#12) and Easton Oberholtzer (#81). Unfortunately for KCI, with thirty-seconds left on the clock, Grand River scored the last goal of the period [Nathan Ertez (#29), assisted by Reid Bromley (#8)], bringing the score to 2-4 for Grand River.
Pressure was strong for KCI in the third period, and hope still lingered, but not for long. Right away, Grand River scored their fifth goal of the game by Logan Young (#24), assisted by Trey Weinsten (#11) and Cole Hunsberger (#7). As KCI battled for the puck and the opportunity to tie the game, Cole O'Donnell (#14) racked up the next penalty for cross-checking. Grand River scored back to back with seconds left on the clock, the first by Sam Singh (#21) at 1:37 and the second at 58.6 seconds by Ronan Mash (#9), assisted by Hudson Parker (#38) and Sam Singh (#21), bitterly ending the game with the score of 2-7 for Grand River.
