On May 15th, 16th and 17th at lunch, KCI’s greenhouse will temporarily be transformed into a fully functioning thrift store for KCI’s second Thrift Day so far.
This year’s Thrift Day was arranged primarily by KCI’s Climate Council members, council executives Lilah Castle and Ivy Roy, Ms. Wheelans, Ms. Hill Wood, and over 24 student volunteers. The organizers, to their surprise, collected a more-than-anticipated two to three weeks worth of clothing donations.
In addition to selling various clothing donations, the greenhouse will play music, offer plant giveaways on Friday, and more, with the goal in mind to raise awareness about consumption issues and textile waste and to ultimately reduce it, and to increase sustainability.
Additionally, change rooms will be offered, and the check out station will be located by the greenhouse doors. The money raised will be given back to the KCI community to fund Nutrition For Learning and personal care items.
Teacher and organizer Ms. Wheelans expressed her enthusiasm and excitement towards the joyful and positive energy Thrift Day has brought to KCI so far: “I just really love the energy,” Ms. Wheelans stated. “A really great vibe.”
Ms. Wheelans also explained how she hopes Thrift Day can teach others that “it can be cool” to implement environmentally-friendly practices and habits.
Teacher and organizer Ms. Hill Wood indicated the importance of educating others on consumption and textile waste issues, and how Thrift Day is not only helping to educate students, but directly involving them in the cause: “It's about those little tiny things that we can do and make a habit," Ms. Hill Wood stated.
Ms. Hill Wood also mentioned the plant giveaway that will take place on Friday at lunch. This giveaway will highlight: “plants for people, plants for pollinators and plants for the environment," she noted.
Overall the teacher organizers are evidently enthusiastic about KCI’s second ever Thrift Day. Be sure to check out the event on May 15th, 16th and 17th in the greenhouse!
