Sabrina Carpenter's new single has been soaring with popularity in the past month. Espresso is an upbeat, nu-disco pop song. It is definitely good, but all hits have more reasons than that for their popularity. So why, then, is Espresso so popular?
First of all, Espresso was released exactly one week before The Tortured Poets Department came out. If you have not heard of it, The Tortured Poets Department is Taylor Swift's latest record. So, pop music fans were waiting in anticipation for this big album, and were ready to listen to new music. A good song that they hadn't heard before seemed exciting, and probably helpfully distracting. Time goes by slowly when you're waiting, but faster if something new is going on.
On a similar note, with The Tortured Poets Department coming out recently, pop music charts have been crowded with its heavy, tortured tracks. Many other pop albums have been similar lately, too, and focus on sad topics. Even Dua Lipa’s recent “optimistic” album, Radical Optimism, has multiple serious songs. Listeners deeply enjoy the laid-back lyrics of Espresso. The music video even has sections where Sabrina is frolicking on a beach! A relaxed song is wonderfully refreshing for everyone.
Also, it is almost summer, and people are even more ready for sunny music. This song is so bright that it feels perfect for our warming weather. If it had been released during, say, February, the feeling would not have been right. Sabrina Carpenter was probably aware of this. Espresso probably still would have been successful, just not at this level.
Overall, Espresso’s fame is credited to a few things. These include: depressing new albums like The Tortured Poets Department, the sunny weather, and it's unfamiliar care-free attitude (And, of course, its quality).
