I was speaking to my grandfather recently, and the topic of Stanleys came up. He had some riveting information about the past of the now Tiktok-famous water bottle, along with some interesting opinions. So, I interviewed him about all of this. Lets hear what he said!
The Past
Tell me about your relationship with Stanleys.
My relationship?
(struggling to find words) Yeah, like... like... yeah.
It wasn't a pet. (laughter) It was in my lunchbox.
What did you use it for?
I used it to keep my drink warm for lunch. Or cold, depending on the weather.
Were they a trend? Kind of?
There was... Well, when I was a kid, all the men were carrying them to work. So, we kids found that they wound up in our... the lid of our lunchbox, with a little clasp to hold them in place. So that when it was time to, we would have to take the Stanley out by the handle- it had a handle- and unscrew the top, that would be you cup, unscrew the seal, pour you drink, and drink it. So it was a... utilitarian purpose.
What do you think of their popularity now?
Well I gotta be honest with ya, I didn't know that they were in again! (laughter)
Were their many colors of Stanleys?
Just green.
(amazed) Wow. Did girls have Stanleys?
Some did. Most did not.
What did you put in your Stanley most days? In winter, what did you put in your Stanley?
Cocoa.
Were there multiple sizes or shapes?
Nope. There may have been, but we were only aware of one.
And they fit it your lunchbox?
Fit in your lunchbox.
What year... or years was this?
In grammar school. I got grammar school in the fifties.

This information shows how drastically Stanleys have changed in the past 70 years. First of all, they have literally had a company makeover. Now, instead of army- green thermoses, a large portion are pastel water bottles! Also, most Stanleys now are just for show, but back then, they were more practical. Lastly, the target market for the brand has shifted dramatically. Instead of masculine men and their sons, it is now mostly cool young girls and women.
I will say that, over the past month, the Stanley hype has died down. This is because most people who are interested in them already own one- or more! Even some folks who do not love Stanleys have aquired them. Besides, now that people are speculating that these water bottles contain lead, many are afraid to getor use them. This lessens the representation of the brand, and is therefor making non-owners feel less pressured to buy the product. Everyone is simply seeing them less!
However, since they are so expensive, many people who possess Stanleys now feel pressured to use theirs. When you send that much money on an item, it is a painful idea to just throw it away. This means that we will probably be seeing them around for a long time. A trend like that cannot just disappear.
