It was a dark and stormy night, or at least I wish it was. I'm Rudy Meadows, and I wish my life could be anything but normal. All around school I hear, "I got stuck in a building yesterday!" or "I'm going skydiving!" or even "I got a pet dog!" I never get stuck in buildings, I never go skydiving, and I'll never get a dog because my mom's allergic.
"Ruby it's time for school," my mom shouts as she sticks her head through my room door.
"Coming," I groan as I get out of bed and look in the mirror. I have the plainest brown eyes, the plainest curly brown hair, and even my room is plain. People have probably have never even heard of a "plain room," but I have one. My room is the normal messy, dirty, and not one little bit cool a room. I walk down the stairs to breakfast, and I eat my scrambled eggs and bacon. I put on my red sneakers and pull on a green hoodie.
"Beep, Beep!" I hear the noisy bus approaching my house and my mom rushes me to catch the bus.
"I could've at least missed the bus," I mutter to myself, wishing my life wasn't so plain. I hop off of the bus and I see my best friend Tara waving at me.
"Hi Ruby," Tara shouts smiling at me.
"Hi," I reply gloomily.
"Guess what just happened?" Tara says excitedly.
"What," I reply, itching to know.
"While you were still in your house, there was a fire in a trash can on the bus," Tara says her hazel eyes gleaming.
"Great," I say my voice dripping with sarcasm, but Tara doesn't notice.
"Why is Tara's life always so interesting?" I wondered. Tara's parents were divorced, and Tara was the kind of girl who could be popular but still hung out with some kids who aren't popular. Tara's mom was a zookeeper, and her dad was in the military. Tara had brown hair with some streaks of ginger in it, and she had the most beautiful hazel eyes.
"Oh, and I forgot to tell you this, but Heather Everest invited me to her big birthday bash," Tara squealed smiling at me.
Heather Everest was a popular girl with the best life ever. She had long straight black hair and the darkest brown eyes ever. Her mother was a Fashion designer and her father was a world famous Lawyer. Plus, Heather had lots of money, and she had so much interesting after school activities. These included martial arts and drawing classes. Me on the other hand was the plainest girl ever. My parents were worried I would get hurt doing martial arts. Suddenly the bell rang.
"See you later, Ruby!" Tara shouted waving goodbye.
As I sat down I sighed. I desperately want to be invited to Heather's party. After the long boring not exciting school day, I boarded the bus and I headed home. When I got off the bus I ran to the old wishing pond that had been there for a while. Then I picked up a beautiful, white polished stone and throw it in the lake. "I wish I could be anything but normal," I whispered, before turning around and leaving.
The next morning I woke up to shouting from down in the kitchen. I put on my fluffy mint green slippers and ran down the stairs. "What's going on," I asked? "You guys woke me up!"
"Oh, I'm sorry honey," my mother said, "It's just that your father got a new job," my mother continued shooting a glare at my father.
"So, we're moving?" I shouted, clenching my fists.
"No, we are not," my mother said firmly putting her hand on my shoulder.
"Then what are we going to do," I ask, pulling away from my mother.
"Your fathers job thing only lasts for a month," my mother said grabbing a cup of coffee.
"Your mother is correct," my father said smiling. I grab a bagel from the fridge and I run to Tara's house.
Tara opens the door and looks surprised when she sees me. "Hi, Ruby I thought your parents didn't let you go out alone," Tara said letting me in.
"Well they aren't so strict now," I say plopping down on Tara's bed.
"I thought you weren't invited to Heather's birthday party," Tara said applying on a thick layer of hot pink lip gloss.
"I wasn't," I reply, confused. Was Tara just wanting to make me feel bad.
"Well, I heard Heather's looking for waiters," Tara told me, fluffing her wavy brown hair.
"How's that going to help me?" I asked curiously.
"Well you can obviously sneak into the party dressed as a waiter," Tara said in her annoying know it all voice.
"Where am I going to find a waiter costume," I ask?
"Well remember that year in second grade when I dressed up as a waiter for halloween?" Tara said, putting on some pink shiny heels.
"Yeah," I replied, wondering if I should sneak into the party.
"Well, just wear that," Tara said, grabbing her purse and pulling me into the car. I quickly pull on the frilly waiter costume. When we reached Heather's house, I nervously walked to the security line.
"Ticket please," the security man asked me, holding his hand out.
"Oh, I'm a waiter," I say nervously.
"Oh! In that case come on in," The man told me.
I stepped into the mansion and the first thing I saw was Heather sitting on huge throne wearing a long blue dress with a slit in the middle. Heather also had a crown and she was wearing a fur cape and a pair of tall sharp heels.
"Who are you, servant?" Heather demands glaring at me. I find it hard to look at Heather because of her super shiny diamond necklace, and maybe for the fact that I don't want to get busted.
"I'm a waiter," I say meekly, my voice squeaky like a small mouse.
"Oh, in that case go to the kitchen," Heather said, not paying another second of attention at me. Instead Heather examined her perfect polished nails in a compact mirror. She was making sure even her nails were perfect. "What are you staring at?" Heather snapped, "Go to the kitchen." Heather glared at me, and with a commanding wave of her hand I decided it was best for me to go.
"Have you ever served a single dish?" A girl my age in the kitchen scolded, snatching a plate from my hand.
"Claire don't be bitter," A girl who also looked my age said, smiling at me.
Claire glared at me but she kept on washing the dishes. "Hi! I'm Alexandra but you can call me Alex," Alex said waving at me.
I smiled nervously and I asked, "What are you guys doing here?"
"Same as you," Claire said.
"When we heard there was a party that paid us 1000 dollars for working during the party we couldn't resist," Alex said tightening her apron.
Suddenly a boy who looked about 16 came running in. "Heather's coming in to inspect our duties," He shouted. Once he said those words the kitchen became chaos, people everywhere were running to find "things" to do. I quickly ran into the back room in fear of being caught.
Click, Clack, Click, Clack, I hear the noisy sound of Heather's heels. "Why are you here, Queen Heather?" Claire's bitter voice said.
"For an inspection of course," Heather said, rolling her dark eyes.
"Heather!" A loud commanding voice shouted. The kitchen doors burst open one more time and a glamorous woman walked in. She had the same dark eyes and hair as Heather, and she was wearing a simple but fashionable red dress, and some diamond heels.
"Heather, I told you its tine for your party," Mrs. Everest said sternly a frown on her red lips. Heather flipped her hair and walked off with her mother.
After checking the coast is clear I snuck out into the bright party. I hid my apron and gloves behind a fancy sofa, and I grabbed a cup of fruit punch.
Soon the party ends, and I run back home. When I enter my house I see my parents standing near the door with huge smiles on their face. "Whats wrong?" I say nervously.
"We signed you up for karate and a haunted house summer camp," My dad said, smiling at me.
"What!" I shrieked, my face turning as red as a ripe tomato.
"Don't leave yet!" My mom shouted grabbing me by my hood.
"We are getting a dog," My dad blurted out. My parents took my hand and lead me to the living room.
"WOOF WOOF!" I heard loud barking and winced at the sound.
"We got a Pit Bull," My mom said, grabbing the dog and handing it to me.
"WOOF WOOF!" the Pit Bull barks again.
"No thanks," I say, backing away slowly. I run into my room, promising that tomorrow I would go and reverse the wish that I made.
I woke up to ferocious barks and noisy sounds from the kitchen. I warily put on my slippers and ran to the wishing pond. I searched and searched for a shiny stone. Miraculously, my hand landed on one. I tossed it in the lake. "I wish I could have my old life back," I whispered. The wind blew ferousiously, and a second later, I realized I wass back on the day I made my wish.
