It was Thursday, April 3rd, 2024, around 4:00 p.m., in Winchester. Rain began spitting from the grey sky, mixed with a bit of hail at points. The wind was very strong. A couple hours later, this had intensified! It was pouring out! Roughly at 9:00 p.m., the rain became an Then, the town began to fall asleep...
When everyone woke up, snow powdered the ground. Clearly, we had experienced some flurries overnight. At the moment, it seemed to be hailing. Soon, the snow began again. Despite the fact that it was April, and we had not received any type of real frozen precipitation in months, we were having a small blizzard!
The streets were covered in dangerous slush, too. Because of a mysterious equipment failure, Winchester was unable to ice the streets or sidewalks. Nothing was melting, and this was very scary.
One man that we spoke to even almost got in an accident because of this! He lives at the top of Winthrop street, and has to drive down the steep hill there to get to work. As he turned out of his driveway, his car slipped on the slush. The brakes were failing, and he started to slide down the slope. One car was going up the hill, and almost hit him! After that, it took a bit for his brakes to work, and he could have crashed into the intersection at the bottom of the hill.
By 7:30 a.m., it was consistently flurrying outside. Schools were announced to start two hours later than usual, due to the state of the roads. Gusts of wind occasionally swept snow off roofs. Students huddled up at home, leisurely watching the snowflakes fall.
Around 9:00 a.m., the snow shifted back to ice. These crystals were thin and fast, so walking outdoors was not pleasant. Luckily, the snow resumed shortly.
Later that morning, it began to rain lightly. The rain was turning the snow into watery slush and puddles, and it seemed that this crazy ordeal was over...
That was not true, though! At about 4:20 p.m. that day, the snow returned. It replaced everything that had been washed away previously! Accumulation began to speed up around 5:00 p.m. This was because the snowflakes had almost doubled in size! They were coming down rather quickly.
At almost 9:00 p.m. that night, the snow pretty much finished falling. Now, Winchester was covered in a blanket of fresh snow, and looked adorable! It is crazy to think that this all happened during spring.
