During the first few months of school, you might have seen teachers standing in the front and back of the school, holding signs that said “Fair Contract Now”. You might have also seen teachers wearing red T-shirts. Have you ever wondered what this is all about?
For the information, I interviewed one of the leaders of the teachers’ group to get their side of the view.
Teachers of Winchester Public Schools have a 3 year contract about work conditions and it will be signed every 3 years. However, last year there was no contract signed so teachers are working for an outdated contract. The teachers are trying to communicate with the Winchester Public School Committee and the superintendent to come up with fair contracts as soon as possible. By far, the family leave policy has come to an agreement. But the cost of living still needed adjustments and took longer to come to an agreement. The teachers wanted better paying conditions to cope with the rising housing costs and inflation. The topic has been going back and forth, the teachers will stand outside on Mondays, no matter the weather, and wear red, black and white shirts. Currently, they think they have come to an agreement on the Monday of 12/15.
The teachers’ main goal is to let others know that they care about this topic and they want to be treated fairly with their own life, own family and have the conditions to have their own lifestyle.
