“I don’t understand why you won’t let me go ice skating with my friends!” shouted Shelia, slamming her fork onto her plate. She angrily mashed up her broccoli against the plate with her fork.
“Indoor voices at the table, please, honey,” said her mom as she took a bite of her food. Shelia stared up from her plate and opened her mouth to say something.
Shelia’s older brother Jared smirked, “Yeah, Shelia, indoor voices at the table,” he said as he stole a French fry off Shelia's plate. Shelia glared at him.
“When you have better behavior, you can go ice skating with your friends,” said her dad, taking a bite out of his un-mushed broccoli.
“Please! Dad! I’ll do the dishes for a month!” whined Shelia, cutting a piece of steak for herself, and was about to take a bite of her steak until Jared stole her steak off her plate. Shelia reached over the table and tried grabbing one of his French fries.
CLUNK! Shelia knocked over Jared’s glass of water.
“Shelia! No is the final answer,” said her mom sternly, trying to wipe up the water with paper towels.
“Can I go to the park with my friends tomorrow after school?” asked her annoying younger sister Gemma.
“Of course, honey!” said her mom sweetly to her.
“Ok!” said Gemma as she took a bite out of her food.
“WHAT?!” exploded Shelia, “She gets to go to the park with her friends, and I don’t get to go ice skating?!”
“Well… she is more behaved than you, Shelia. Plus, unlike you, she finished her food,” replied her mom. “Also, please quiet down, Shelia. Don’t make me remind you again.” Shelia sighed and stomped out of the room as Jared pelted her with baby carrots from his plate.
“I didn’t say you could be excused!” said her dad sternly, standing up from his chair.
“Yeah, well, if you aren’t going to let me do what I want, I won’t listen to you!” muttered Shelia under her breath, ignoring her dad.
“Shelia SummerBell, listen to your father!” said her mom, raising her voice as she stood up too. “You’ve already caused so much trouble tonight!” Shelia ran out of the room.
“I hate all of you guys! I hope you disappear!” she screamed as she ran outside and sat in the tree house she had built. Hot, burning tears rolled down her cheek.
Plip plop! They fell onto the wooden floor of the tree house. Shelia angrily wiped away her tears and stood up.
She crossed the road and went to a small wish pond across from her house. Next to the pond there was an old wooden sign:
Be Careful Of What You Wish For it said in big, loopy letters.
Shelia picked at some rocks until she found a flat, perfect-looking rock. The only thing was it had a crack in it. She threw the rock into the pond and wished, “I wish my family would just disappear!” she thought angrily. The rock skipped three times and sunk deep into the water. A cold gust of winter wind blew. Shelia shivered. She wanted to go back home, but she was still very mad at her family, so she decided to stay outside at the pond despite the cold, frosty air.
A few hours later, nightfall came, so she decided to go back inside. It was far too cold and dark to be outside.
“M-Mom? D-Dad? G-Gemma? J-Jared?” she asked. “I’m sorry!”
No reply.
She waited five seconds.
Still no reply.
One minute had passed by now.
There was still no reply.
Suddenly, she heard a loud woofing sound as a brown and white ball of fur came bounding into the room.
“Cocoa! You’re still here!” she said happily, as Cocoa came bounding into her. “Maybe Mom and Dad went somewhere with Jared and Gemma,” thought Shelia as she hugged her dog tightly. She got ready for bed, studied five minutes for her math test, and went to bed.
Shelia woke up. Her stomach grumbled. She rushed downstairs to find that… her parents and her siblings were still gone.
