On May 3rd, from 2 to 3:30 pm, parents, teachers, and community members toured the numerous posters displayed in McCall’s cafeteria. These posters offered the culminating visual in the project every 8th grader completed in their Civics class.
During the showcase, families, teachers, and members of our community proceeded from table to table, viewing each group’s project and asking questions about the topics at hand. Students explained these topics and promoted their causes.
The Civics Action Project (CAP) is a group project that 8th graders complete during their Civics class. Students select a topic, research it, and present their findings and plans for improvement during the showcase. In a way, this experience functions like a middle school academic conference, pushing young learners ever further in their community explorations.
The topics each group chose were vastly different, ranging from refinishing the gym floor to making local healthcare more affordable. Each group selected its topic based on issues they witnessed in our community. Then, they conducted research and distributed surveys to collect data. Using that data, groups created an “action plan” specifying how they might begin to solve that issue. Finally, they launched fundraisers through bake sales or gathering donations to generate capital and help bring that plan to life.

There are various ways to help, including donating to causes that matter to you, attending bake sales and other fundraising activities, signing petitions, or simply raising awareness for these endeavors around town. Although most fundraisers and donation periods might have ended, you can still contribute to meaningful causes and help build our community into a better place for everyone. The posters and flyers around McCall contain helpful information and attest to the purposeful efforts of every 8th grader in Civics.
Your contributions will greatly help these 8th graders and our town!
