FPS Literacy Coach

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Literacy!

Literacy is more than just reading. In today's society, literacy is more about being literate - or able - to comprehend and interact with concepts related to text, speech, culture, digital resources, and all subject areas. Ensuring that our students are literate across those areas will help them grow into productive citizens and stewards of our future society.

This is my fourth year as a literacy coach at Franklinton Primary School. Previously, I taught 5th grade English Language Arts for four years, first grade for two years, and second grade for two years. I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration and Organizational Psychology in 2007, alternative teacher certification in Elementary Grades 1-5 in 2008, Master of Educational Leadership and Technology is 2012, and am in the dissertation phase of my Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a hopeful graduation date of May 2020. I find that my diverse educational background provides a unique foundation on which I can support and empower other educators.

The programs that we use at FPS to address students' literacy needs are summarized below:

Open Court Reading provides explicit, systematic instruction on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Write from the Beginning utilizes Thinking Maps to provide structured writing process practice.

Zaner-Bloser Handwriting trains students in proper positionality and penmanship.

Daily Grammar Practice exposes students to parts of speech and grammar, usage, and mechanics concepts needed to become better communicators.
