This course provides an introduction to the aerospace industry through a hands-on approach and exploration of topics such as flight, space, and supporting technologies. Students explore the history of aviation, aerodynamics and aircraft components, flight conditions, airport and flight operations, space systems, rocketry, and living and working in the space environment. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills.

Aerospace Technology II provides an advanced exploration of flight, space travel, and supporting technologies through a practical approach centered around problem-solving and design. Students explore concepts in aircraft operations; aircraft design, flight safety, and maintenance; airport infrastructure; rocketry; and small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). Cybersecurity Fundamentals

This course focuses on the evolving and all-pervasive technological environment with an emphasis on securing personal, organizational, and national information. Students will be introduced to the principles of cybersecurity, explore emerging technologies, examine threats and protective measures, and investigate the diverse high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand career opportunities in the field of cybersecurity.

In this course, students enter the world of computer technology and gain practical experience in assembling a computer system.  Students will install, configure, and secure various operating systems.  Students will install, configure, and secure various operating systems.  Students will troubleshoot computers and peripherals and use system tools and diagnostic software.  They develop skills in computer networking and resource sharing.  In addition, students explore the relationships between internal and external computer components.  Upon successful completion of the course, students may qualify to take the CompTIA A+ certification exam.

In this course, students will gain a basic understanding of emerging technologies including unified communications, mobile, cloud, and virtualization technologies. The course prepares students for postsecondary education and training and a successful career in information technology. Upon successful completion of the course, students may qualify to take CompTIA’s A+ and Network+ certification exams.

This course may be dual-enrolled. A final grade and/or credit for this course will be earned at the end of the year. Students may have the opportunity to earn six college credits through Laurel Ridge Community College (ITN 106), pending eligibility and meeting enrollment criteria. Additional fees may apply for college credit. 

Electronic Systems II

In this course, students work with electronic devices, instruments, and circuits, building and designing devices to apply theories and laws with electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors. They also study integrated circuits used in computers, amplifiers, televisions, and other equipment. Students will build various electronic devices. Students will examine how electricity and electronics are involved in all aspects of the industry, including planning, finance, management, technical and production skills, and community, safety, and environmental issues.

This course will be phased out after the 2026–2027 school year. Enrollment is limited to students who require this course as a program completer.

Imaging Technology

This course introduces students to the basic principles of photography while providing a strong emphasis on digital imaging.  Students study the development of photography as a communication medium and its evolution into the digital realm.  Students learn to use image-editing software to manipulate digital images.

Television and Media Production I

This professional training course prepares students for careers in television and the broader video production industry. Students practice safety; explore the preproduction, production, and postproduction processes in television and media; and explore media literacy and criticism. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

This course builds upon knowledge and skills from Television and Media Production I. Students will generate fictional and non-fictional media content. Students will enhance their video production skills by entering the studio and control room and become proficient with industry-standard equipment and software. They put their knowledge of video production into action with the use of sophisticated tools and equipment as they begin to develop their personal portfolios. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

This course meets for one block and requires students to complete work outside of school hours to fulfill VDOE requirements.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems

This course prepares students to pilot drones under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Part 107 guidelines for small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS).  Students get an overview of the national airspace system, FAA regulations, and the design and operation of small drones. Students monitor weather, address loading and performance of drones, and coordinate flight operation logistics. They perform administrative tasks, train, and pilot sUAS. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students’ career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

In this course, students learn the applications of small, unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) such as photography, videography and analysis of data collected through sensors and cameras. Students receive hands-on instruction in piloting a sUAS while learning about various sensors, flight operations, regulations, and commercial flight planning.
