In this course, students will study the basic principles, concepts, and practices of the accounting cycle for a service business and a merchandising business. Topics covered include analyzing transactions, journalizing and posting entries, preparing payroll records and financial statements, and managing cash systems. Ethics and professional conduct are emphasized. Students learn fundamental accounting procedures using both manual and electronic systems. The cooperative education method is available for this course. Students combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position with continuing supervision throughout the school year.

In this course, students will gain knowledge of advanced accounting principles, procedures, and techniques used to solve business problems and make financial decisions. Students work in a technology-integrated environment, using accounting and spreadsheet software to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and interpret business financial data related to inventory, fixed assets, notes/accounts payable and receivable, implementation of a partnership and a corporation, and other specialized accounting systems. Using authentic workplace scenarios that reflect current industry trends and standards, students analyze financial data and acquire knowledge of business ethics. The cooperative education method is available for this course. Students combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position with continuing supervision throughout the school year.

In this course, students will learn how to navigate the financial decisions they must face and make informed decisions related to career exploration, budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, taxes, saving, investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, living independently, and inheritance. The development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles will provide the basis for responsible citizenship and career success. In addition to developing personal finance skills, students will also study basic occupational skills and concepts in preparation for entry-level employment in the field of finance. The course incorporates all economics and financial literacy objectives included in the Code of Virginia §22.1-200-03B. The cooperative education method is available for this course. Students combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position with continuing supervision throughout the school year.

The development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles can provide the basis for responsible citizenship and career success. On a personal level, students learn that their human capital (knowledge and skills) is their most valuable resource.
Classroom To Office with Navy Federal Credit Union is designed to enhance the Economics and Personal Finance experience. Course content will be accelerated with all competencies for the required Economics and Personal Finance course met through this program. This opportunity allows students time on-site or virtually with Navy Federal Credit Union mentors during the last nine weeks. Navy Federal Credit Union mentors will coach students through the development, implementation, and presentation of a special project individualized to the student’s interests and based on community needs.
During the course, content will be infused with guest presentations from Navy Federal Credit Union staff virtually or on the school campus. After the course, additional work-based learning opportunities at Navy Federal Credit Union may be available for eligible students.
