English Learner Program at John Handley High School
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at John Handley High School is designed to support students who are still acquiring English as their second language. New students who have a language other than English noted on their Home Language Survey will be assessed using the WIDA MODEL Screening test. This assessment evaluates their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, providing an overall English proficiency level. The results guide appropriate course placement. The ESL program offers both sheltered classes, which focus on building English language proficiency and content knowledge, and co-taught support classes in various subject areas.
English Learner Identification Process
To identify students as English Learners, we follow a two-step process. First, the Home Language Survey is reviewed. If a language other than English is spoken at home, the student proceeds to the second step, which involves the WIDA MODEL screening assessment. Students scoring below a 5.0 in both literacy and overall proficiency are classified as English Learners. These students are then placed in courses based on their WIDA scores and previous academic experience.
Procedure for Students Aged 18 and Older
Students aged 18 or older who have not earned a high school diploma, either in the United States or in another country, may still attend John Handley High School. However, they must meet with the principal to discuss the time required to complete their diploma and explore other potential educational pathways.
Home Country Credits
Students are encouraged to provide documentation from their home country, such as transcripts, to assist in course selection. In some cases, previous coursework may be credited toward graduation requirements. These records also help the school better understand the student's academic background, including strengths in subjects like math, science, English, and history.
If a student or family is unable to provide official documentation, a structured interview will be conducted to gather information. This process will be used similarly to the documentation. If the documentation or interview reveals that the student has graduated from their home country, they will not be eligible to enroll.
Parent Liaison Services
At John Handley High School, parent liaisons play a vital role in bridging communication between families and the school. They provide language support for tasks such as completing registration forms, scheduling meetings, and offering interpretation services during school-related discussions. Parents or guardians needing assistance are encouraged to reach out to a liaison for support.
