Expanding All-Gender Restroom Access

A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR NONPROFITS, FOUNDATIONS, COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND OTHER MISSION-DRIVEN ORGANIZATIONS

As a nonbinary queer person and a consultant working in People Operations / Human Resources for nonprofits, foundations, and social impact organizations, I run into the issue of restroom access on a daily basis in both my personal and professional lives. I have noticed that many organizations I work with often have good intentions around queer inclusion, but lack the tools, resources, language and follow-through to actually create queer-inclusive spaces, even when it comes to something as fundamental to day-to-day functioning as restrooms.

I created this free resource as an attempt to provide rapid response practical support around creating all-gender restrooms at values-aligned workplaces. In it, you’ll find information on why gender-neutral restrooms matter, talking points to use with decision makers, board members, and the rest of your team, considerations for signage and facility design, sample policy language, lists of curated resources, and even more about the operational and logistical process of making considerations about and changes to your organization’s gender-neutral restroom access.

While I don’t think queer liberation begins or ends with restrooms (or at our workplaces!), I do think it’s important to take the steps we can right now to materially improve people’s lives (including work lives), and that people in positions of power publicly show solidarity with trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming folks in the face of mounting threats to LGBTQIA2S+ communities.

I was not paid to create this and it's free to access. My hope is that folks will be able to use it to spark ideas and create change in their own spheres of influence. Please feel free to share it with others who may find it useful.

I'm just some guy who needed to make a landing page for my project. I'm a consultant, leftist queer, book reader and snack aficionado tryin' to learn something new every day and leave things better than I found 'em. To connect with me for work, find me on LinkedIn or via my consulting team's website. To connect with me IRL, catch me in the park walking my dog, at the library, or in line at Pigeon Bagels.
