THE ACADEMY

Woodward Academy is a pre-K to 12th-grade independent school offering unparalleled opportunities in academics, the arts, and athletics. In a broadly diverse and caring community of more than 2,400 students from 23 counties in the state, Woodward embraces the uniqueness of each individual. Guided by its core values of Excellence, Character, and Opportunity, Woodward offers a full range of college preparatory instructional tracks, and a community where students are appreciated for their individual strengths and contributions. With 50 percent students of color, we are among the most diverse independent schools in the nation.

A deep respect for difference is an integral part of every classroom experience and cocurricular offering at Woodward because it’s our backbone--who we are and what we value. Students and faculty bring a variety of races, religions, cultures, ethnicities, and learning styles, which means students benefit every day from engaging with peers and mentors who are different from them. At Woodward, we understand that we are strongest together and that an education among people who come from the same place, look the same, and have the same experiences will not prepare students for life.

The Woodward Way - Respecting Ourselves, Each Other, Our School, and Our World, and learning how to do these things is both a vital aspect of our students’ education and the foundation of our community’s value system. We see it as our duty to foster social-emotional growth as well as ethical principles in each student, helping them to learn and practice high personal standards of conduct so they can become the best version of themselves. Instilling these values in each student in turn builds community, creating an environment where every student has equal opportunity to flourish.

ACADEMICS

A Woodward graduate is intelligent and confident, fully prepared for college and life beyond. Opportunities to discover, collaborate, explore, and experiment are woven throughout our curriculum at every grade level. We employ techniques such as design thinking so that students learn critical thinking while broadening their abilities and competencies. Our global connections and STEAM programs allow students to broaden their horizons and explore science and technology through hands-on, real-world application. More than that, our graduates possess an uncommon kind of wisdom. At Woodward, they learn to play a role in sustaining our world, and they are inspired to make it a better place. Here at Woodward, academic excellence means more than guiding students toward mastery of skills. It means guiding them to self-discovery and connection, providing a foundation that allows students to fulfill their potential and fully embrace life. The path to success starts at Woodward.

Primary School

From pre-kindergarten through third grade, our dedicated teachers offer warm encouragement and wise guidance every step of the way. With low teacher-student ratios in every class, we are able to provide each child with individual attention and a loving environment that builds a bridge of support between school and home. Kind and nurturing teachers focus on every child's development, making Woodward one of Georgia's top kindergarten schools, and that warm guidance continues throughout the Primary School years. In every classroom, teachers use a wide range of technological tools to enhance learning, including iPads, SmartBoards, and Lego Robotics. All Primary School students participate in dedicated classes for science, art, PE, and music as well as Spanish, library, and computer classes. School is every child’s first experience of the world outside of home. It’s where we learn to read and write as well as to make friends and to understand and appreciate the world outside ourselves. At the Primary School, we create a sense of family, a home away from home where Woodward’s youngest students can learn, grow, and discover.

LOWER SCHOOL

Our Lower School introduces new challenges while keeping curiosity alive so students’ true interests and strengths can grow. Surrounded by rich stories and histories—their own, their teachers’, their peers’—students venture outside the borders of their own experience, explore varying identities, and begin to discover their own. As students progress, our dedicated teachers find engaging ways to inspire their inquisitiveness and imagination while guiding them through the mastery of basic and essential concepts. Our students thrive in this learning environment, where it’s OK to make mistakes because perseverance is an essential part of success.

Woodward North

An elementary school conveniently located in Johns Creek that enrolls more than 250 students from pre-K through sixth grade, providing them with a warm, nurturing environment where every student finds his or her own unique strength and talent. Our 33-acre wooded campus includes a nature trail that is used for educational and recreational purposes. The large majority of Woodward North students continue their education at Woodward’s Main Campus in College Park beginning in seventh grade, where they join peers from 100 different zip codes and 23 metro Atlanta counties. The Academy provides bus transportation to and from College Park, and many students choose to ride MARTA, in designated Woodward cars with assigned security officers.

Middle School

At Woodward, the Middle School years overflow with opportunities for learning, with increased expectations for greater independence, organization, and responsibility. Middle School is a time of tremendous growth and change—intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. Guided by dedicated teachers, coaches, and counselors, our students maximize their individual strengths and develop a sense of self-worth that lasts a lifetime.

Upper School

In our Upper School, we don’t measure a student’s success against an arbitrary standard. Instead, because we know our students so well, we measure their progress against themselves, inspiring them to push beyond their self-imposed limits. We offer incredible opportunities in the arts, service learning, athletics, and other cocurricular offerings, all revolving around a unique academic program that truly tailors the experience to each student’s individual abilities, needs, and aspirations.

Academic Tracks

Our curriculum provides each student with an education that combines breadth, depth, and flexibility in programs ranging from core academics to opportunities in STEAM, the arts, Global Connections, and world languages. One size doesn't fit even two at Woodward. Students can mix and match their course levels. Let's face it: not everyone is as good at calculus as they are at 20th century literature. We offer courses at different levels so students can take it up a notch in areas where they feel confident and pull back a bit in areas where they need more reinforcement.

College Counseling

Today’s high school graduates face a world of uncertainties—economic, political, social, environmental. At Woodward Academy, we make certain our students are ready—with a sure sense of who they are as people; as thinkers; as members of a diverse, dynamic community; and as citizens of a complex and evolving world. That is why our College Counseling program strives to help students find the college or university that best matches their individual strengths and interests. Our talented team of college counselors have one goal in mind: to help students achieve both happiness and success in their higher education choices.

Graduation Distinctions

Woodward offers students the ability to graduate with diploma distinctions in Global Studies, Sustainability, or Service Learning. These distinctions are awarded to students with interest, aptitude, and accomplishments in areas that are truly vital to the future of our world, preparing them to pursue their passions in college and beyond and giving them an advantage in college admissions and future career opportunities.

transition learning support program

A comprehensive program with a college-preparatory curriculum for students with mild to moderate learning differences so they can flourish. With smaller class sizes, a faculty comprised of specialized experts, and proven pedagogical approaches for every academic area, our Transition Learning Support Program goes well beyond a few learning support aids dropped into traditional classrooms and instead provides a comprehensive environment designed exclusively for our Transition Program students. Our students learn the same demanding college-preparatory curriculum as their Woodward peers in the mainstream track, but do so while cultivating the tools and strategies needed to convert different learning styles into confidence, social and emotional stability, and tremendous academic success.

STUDENT LIFE

At Woodward, students can explore virtually any interest because the Academy offers more clubs and activities, arts offerings, winning athletic teams, and service learning opportunities than one could ever exhaust. We want our students to grow into global citizens who respect and are responsible for themselves, others, and their community. Leadership opportunities exist at every level—beginning with our youngest students as Character Builders in third grade to the Upper School students who serve as Peer Leaders.

THE ARTS

Performing and visual arts programs are offered beginning at the earliest grades. All of our students learn from teachers who are accomplished artists and musicians, and they gain an appreciation and understanding for culture and the history of art. Among Georgia schools with fine arts programs, Woodward Academy has long been recognized for its strength in curriculum and its broad range of offerings in performing arts and visual arts.

ATHLETICS

Woodward Academy’s athletics program includes 18 varsity sports as well as prolific opportunities to try and triumph at all age levels in a wide variety of sports. We build championship teams, but winning is not everything at Woodward. We believe it’s more important for our student-athletes to build integrity and to learn self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. Learn more about our program by reading our Athletic Philosophy. From intramural opportunities in third grade to Upper School athletics, we guide our student-athletes every step of the way with a dedicated staff of coaches and professionals.

ANTI DISCRIMINATION

Woodward Academy is committed to being an anti-discriminatory community. We will not tolerate any form of discrimination on the basis of age, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, learning style, political views, or socioeconomic status. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is woven into the very fabric of who we are and what we do, creating a richer learning community and exceptional academic opportunities for everyone. We will cultivate an environment that fosters a deep respect for difference through continual assessment, transparent communication, action and accountability.
