Ninke van Hichtum (1860 - 1939) is the pseudonym of Sjoukje Troelstra-Bokma de Boer. She was a Dutch and Frisian translator, in addition to being a writer of children's books. She married Pieter Jelles Troelstra and they became involved in socialist politics. As he became more involved she lost a lot of her independence and had to stay at home looking after the children. She was also ill after the birth of two children. Pieter became a member of the Lower House of parliament and, due to involvement with the Hogerhuis affair, went to prison for a month. In this time Ninke wrote Afke's Ten, her best known book. Ninke stayed involved in the socialist newspaper and in 1907 divorced Pieter after he had an affair with the family's housekeeper.
