Lucy M. Boston (1892–1990) wrote a number of books for children and adults most set in a house she bought almost by accident. She had heard there was a house for sale in the village of Hemingford Grey and believed it to be one she had seen many years before. She went to the house, knocked on the door, and said she would like to buy it. The owners had only decided to sell it that morning and it was not on the market yet. All of Lucy Boston's books were written after the age of 60, once she had moved into this new house. She did up the house and garden over many years and created numerous patchwork quilts. The house is still in her family and open to the public by appointment. I was delighted to visit the house and it lived up to my nostalgia for a place I had never visited, I bounced up and down a lot and let out gasps of joy, it is a very magical place. Nick Swarbrick wrote beautifully about our visit here.
