Randall Jarrell (1914 - 1965) was primarily a poet and writer of literary criticism although he did write some children's books. He taught, both children and at university, and had an abiding love of nature. When living in New York he found it stifling. In the second world war he was in the air force. After the war he suffered depression, what I have read suggests it was not to do with the war, and died an early death which experts consider to be accidental. For more about his poetry and litterary criticism I enjoyed reading this from the Poetry Foundation.
