The 3rd and 4th grade students are completing our "pretest" fitness gram testing. When we finish, they students will enjoy a "choice day." On choice days, students are given the opportunity to choose activities or equipment to use. It is a little less structured and allows them an opportunity to make up games, develop rules, and/or play their favorite activities. In 2-4th grade, for choice day, the students play 2 or three group games or "sports." The k-2nd grade students will be playing a couple of group games on the first day of PE this week and then will be having a "choice day" as well. The games will focus on cooperation, following directions, and practicing basic motor skills. Choice day with the younger students looks a little different than with the older students. For the k and 1st students I put out various types of equipment and students have opportunity to explore and be creative with those things. They could make up games to play in groups or play individually.
This week the kindergarteners, first graders, and second grade students will be using beanbags. They will be involved in various activities and games where they will work on manipulative skills as well as balancing the beanbags. The 3rd and 4th graders will be doing some fitnessgram testing. This testing will be used as a base to set goals and practice for the end of year fitness testing. It will include the 15m pacer test, flexibility test, pushup test, and curl up test.
These two weeks we are all participating in a unit that incorporates hula hoops. We will be working on manipulative skills associated using the hula hoops as well as playing games and practicing skills while using them. We will practice our locomotor skills, relational skills, and others, all while using hula hoops.
For these next two weeks our students will be participating in various activities revolving around personal and social responsibility in PE while working on basic fundamental skills and concepts. The k-2 students will be learning and practicing basic locomotor skills while focussing on moving safely and respecting each other as we move. They will be playing some basic tag games also. We will also introduce and practice various movement concepts (changing levels, speeds) and patters (curved, zig-zag). The 3rd and 4th grade students will be playing and participating in various activities that emphasize personal and social responsibility. We will also work on cooperative skills in various activities.
