Welcome to Our Kindergarten Community!

In Kindergarten, it is important to remember that when children play, they learn. This year we are going to have a lot of fun learning and growing! We will be using a brand new literacy program called Fountas & Pinnell Classroom which incorporates read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading as well as phonics and word study. Our students will learn through literacy centers, small group, and whole group instruction. Our handwriting program is called Handwriting Without Tears, and we will learn that we are ALL writers through our writer's workshop where we focus on personal narratives, informational writing, and opinion writing. We will also follow a research-based mathematics curriculum called Investigations Math that nurtures a solid understanding of key mathematical concepts.

We appreciate the support of our families as we have fun learning and growing together in kindergarten!

About Mrs. Kane

I am thrilled to be entering my twenty-first year of teaching and my eleventh year at Central School. I have taught preschool and kindergarten for eight years, fourth grade for four years, and spent many years as a school librarian in the district.

I was born and raised in Cambridgeport, Vermont, and I live today half a mile away from where I was grew up. I graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School and attended Tufts University, graduating summa cum laude. I live in a small house in the middle of a beautiful meadow surrounded by Vermont forests. I love to read and to watch the wildlife out my window, especially the birds (and squirrels) at my feeders and the foxes, wild turkeys, deer, raccoons, and assorted other creatures that wander through my field. I love spending time with my siblings, three sisters who live "away" and two brothers who live nearby, and I have just completed my Masters degree, a M.Ed in Language and Literacy through Lesley University. I also have two grown sons, William and Daniel, who continue to keep me on my toes!

I welcome your emails with any questions or concerns, or just to share information about your child. I can be reached at kate.kane@wnesu.com. You can also text me at 802-376-5044, but I do not get cell service at home (so your messages won't reach me until the next morning at school). Evening messages are best sent by email.

About Mrs. Rawling

I have lived most of my life in Bellows Falls. I attended Bellows Falls Middle School and graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School. After high school, I attended Castleton State College, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading. I have been teaching 28 years and 23 of those have been in Kindergarten!! I have always taught in this district, but besides Central Elementary, I have also taught at the Cherry Hill School as well as the Saxtons River Elementary. Kindergarten is definitely my favorite grade to teach!

I live in Bellows Falls with my family. I have four very active children. Zachary and Andrew are my two older sons that work full time and enjoy all outdoor activities. My youngest son Noah is 19 and has started his sophomore year at Plymouth State University. My daughter Mary-Elizabeth is 17 and is a senior at Bellows Falls Union High School. As you can guess, her brothers are very supportive of her. And, as you can imagine, there is never a dull moment in my home, or a quiet one, I might add!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My email is amy.rawling@wnesu.com and my cell phone number is 1-802-376-4899. I believe that open communication is the key and welcome all calls, texts or emails.
