Spanish 1

In this unit, students will be introduced to foundational Spanish language skills and vocabulary. Students will learn basic greetings and expressions of courtesy, practice identifying themselves and others, and begin developing pronunciation skills through the Spanish alphabet. They will also be introduced to nouns and articles, numbers 0–31, subject pronouns, and the verb ser. These foundational concepts will be revisited and expanded throughout the year as students build confidence communicating in Spanish.

In this unit, students will explore Spanish-speaking countries and their capitals while developing a broader understanding of Hispanic cultures and communities. Students will learn about Día de los Muertos and its significance in Mexican culture, including related traditions, symbols, and practices. They will also research influential Hispanic Americans and share their learning through mini-presentations, helping them make connections between language, culture, history, and identity.

In this unit, students will learn and practice Spanish vocabulary related to school and classroom life. Students will use vocabulary for classroom objects, school subjects, schedules, nouns, and common expressions to describe their school day. They will also continue to practice days of the week, months, and dates as they build confidence communicating about school routines and activities in Spanish.

In this unit, students will learn and practice Spanish vocabulary used to identify and describe people, including family members and friends. Students will use adjectives to describe themselves and others while developing an understanding of adjective placement and noun-adjective agreement. They will also practice communicating about their likes and dislikes, helping them build confidence using Spanish to share information about themselves and the people in their lives.

In this unit, students will learn about seven of the most common verbs in Spanish: ser, tener, gustar, hay, estar, ir, and querer. Students will practice using these verbs in the present tense to communicate basic information about themselves and others. By the end of the unit, students will apply their learning by giving a presentation about themselves and writing about a fellow classmate in Spanish.

In this unit, students will practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish while building new vocabulary and communication skills. Students will learn how to form questions using question words and practice answering basic questions in both spoken and written form. They will also learn vocabulary related to the seasons and weather, allowing them to describe conditions, ask and answer questions, and communicate about everyday topics in Spanish.
