Grade 6 Social Studies

In this unit, students will be introduced to the five themes of geography, foundational research skills, and argumentative writing. Students will practice using maps, examine geographic and cultural characteristics around the world, and explore how geography, culture, and systems of government shape societies.

In this unit, students will examine Mesopotamian civilization, using their skills from Unit One to analyze early civilizations, including those in the Fertile Crescent, and to explore how geography influenced people's lives. Students will also examine Mesopotamian culture, including government, legacies, religion, and inventions. Students will continue to analyze how ancient civilizations impact our world today.  

In this unit, students will examine the cradle of civilization, the Indus River Valley. Students will examine the geography of the land and how it impacted people's lives, early city planning, government, and religion, while creating connections to other early civilizations and our world today. 

In this unit, students will examine Ancient Egypt and its lasting influence on the world. Students will explore how the Nile River shaped Egyptian life, government, religion, architecture, inventions, and cultural beliefs.

In this unit, students will examine the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome and explore how their ideas influenced modern government and society. Students will study the development of democracy and republican government while examining religion, culture, social structures, and lasting contributions to the modern world.
