Grade 1 Social Studies

In this unit, students will explore their place in the world by building on their kindergarten learning and expanding their perspective beyond themselves. Students will compare family, school, and community life in the past and present while exploring multiple perspectives. Through this study, students will ask meaningful questions, gather information, and begin to understand how they fit into society.

In this unit, students will examine map features and how maps are used to understand different places. Students will compare locations, draw conclusions, and explore cultural and environmental differences across communities. Students will also discuss how people’s lives can be different depending on where they live.

In this unit, students will explore the difference between needs and wants. Students will think about what people need to survive and how those needs are different from things people may want. Students will also learn about community helpers, services, facilities, and businesses that help meet the needs of people in their community.
