In this unit, students will explore the different forms of energy, how energy can transform from one form to another, and how energy travels through waves. Throughout the unit, students will investigate real-world applications of energy and wave concepts by studying the 2010 Chilean mine rescue. Using what they learn, students will design and propose safety devices that use different forms of energy to improve communication, rescue efforts, and survival in emergency situations.
In this unit, students will explore how forces affect the motion of objects by causing them to speed up, slow down, change direction, or fall. Through hands-on investigations and real-world examples, students will examine how gravity, friction, and other forces influence motion. They will also investigate balanced and unbalanced forces and develop a deeper understanding of speed, acceleration, and interactions between objects.
In this unit, students will explore the planets of our solar system by learning their names, characteristics, and unique traits, as well as how gravity keeps them in orbit around the Sun. They will investigate how interactions among the Sun, Moon, and Earth produce many of the natural phenomena we experience, including eclipses, tides, and phases of the Moon. As the unit progresses, students will extend their learning beyond our solar system by exploring distant regions of space and examining the conditions that scientists consider when evaluating the possibility of life beyond Earth
In this unit, students will explore Earth’s geologic history and investigate the major events that shaped our planet over billions of years. They will study Earth’s layers, changing landscapes, and the processes that continue to shape the world today. Through the fossil record, students will examine evidence of past life, including what may have caused the dinosaurs' extinction and how organisms adapted and evolved over time. The unit will also examine evolutionary adaptations and developments that contributed to the success and global distribution of humans.
