In this unit, students will learn fundamental piano techniques, including proper hand position and keyboard navigation. They will be introduced to basic staff notation, including whole, half, and quarter notes and the pitches C, D, E, F, and G. Students will learn beginning songs and develop the ability to play with both hands.
In this unit, students will further develop their understanding of staff notation and keyboard navigation by practicing intervals up to a fifth. Students will learn the notes A, B, and C in the left hand and perform songs in multiple hand positions.
In this unit, students will learn the C, F, and G7 chords in both hands and perform songs that use chords in one hand and melody in the other.
In this unit, students will shift their hands to the G position and practice the notes G, A, B, C, and D in both hands. They will learn the G, C, and D7 chords, as well as sharp and flat signs. Students will incorporate black keys into their playing and perform increasingly complex songs.
In this unit, students will use varied accompaniment patterns as they continue to strengthen their playing skills. They will develop their understanding of intervals up to an octave, eighth notes, dotted rhythms, and scales. Students will continue learning new repertoire and review the music theory concepts introduced throughout the course in preparation for the final written and performance assessments.
