In this unit, students will build an understanding of volume, multi-digit multiplication, and multi-digit division. Students will learn that volume measures the space inside solid figures and use unit cubes, layers, and formulas to find the volume of rectangular prisms and composite figures. Students will also multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the distributive property, partial products, and the standard algorithm. In division, students will divide three- and four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors using area models, place value, estimation, and partial quotients. Through real-world math tasks, students will apply whole number operations, estimate appropriately, and solve problems involving volume, multiplication, and division.
In this unit, students will deepen their understanding of decimals and fractions through place value, comparison, addition, and subtraction. Students will explore powers of 10, decimal place value through thousandths, and how to read, write, compare, and round decimals. Students will also add and subtract decimals to hundredths using a variety of strategies. In fractions, students will use equivalent fractions and common denominators to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Through real-world word problems, students will estimate, check for reasonableness, and solve problems involving decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers.
In this unit, students will extend their understanding of decimals and fractions by multiplying and dividing with these numbers. Students will multiply and divide decimals to hundredths, estimate products and quotients, and explain their reasoning using place value. Students will also learn that fractions can represent division, multiply whole numbers by fractions and fractions by fractions, and use fraction multiplication to find area. Students will explore multiplication as scaling, solve real-world problems involving fractions and mixed numbers, and divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. Through models, equations, number lines, and real-world tasks, students will strengthen their ability to reason about decimal and fraction operations.
In this unit, students will strengthen their understanding of measurement, data, and geometry. Students will convert measurement units within the same system and solve multi-step word problems involving measurement conversions. Students will also make and interpret line plots that display fractional measurement data and use that data to solve problems. In geometry, students will classify two-dimensional figures based on their attributes and use Venn diagrams and tree diagrams to show relationships among categories of shapes. Through real-world math tasks, students will apply measurement conversions, analyze data, and organize geometric figures by their properties.
In this unit, students will strengthen algebraic thinking by writing, evaluating, and interpreting numerical expressions with grouping symbols. Students will also learn about the coordinate plane, including the x-axis, y-axis, origin, ordered pairs, and coordinates. Students will plot points, represent real-world problems on the coordinate plane, and use graphs to describe relationships between quantities. Students will also generate numerical patterns from rules, compare corresponding terms, and graph patterns as ordered pairs. Through real-world math tasks, students will connect expressions, patterns, and coordinate graphing to solve problems and explain mathematical relationships.
