Students will represent stories with known and missing values, use related equations to check their work, and solve comparison problems to find how many more or fewer. Students will also collect, organize, and compare data using tally charts and picture graphs. Through hands-on activities and real-world tasks, students will determine whether equations are true or false, find unknown numbers in equations, interpret data, and explain their mathematical thinking.
In this unit, students will build place value understanding by organizing, counting, reading, and writing numbers using tens and ones. Students will use concrete objects, visual models, and 120 charts to understand that two-digit numbers are made of groups of tens and ones. Students will count forward and backward, read and write numbers to 120, identify 10 more or 10 less than a number, and recognize patterns in the 120 chart. Students will also compare two-digit numbers using place value and symbols for greater than, less than, and equal to. Through hands-on activities and real-world tasks, students will analyze data, explain number relationships, and use math language to describe their thinking.
