In this unit, students will explore geometric reasoning, measurement, and relationships among figures. Students will develop an understanding that formal mathematical arguments establish new truths by logically connecting previously known facts. They will measure features of geometric figures by assigning numerical values to attributes, allowing those attributes to be compared and analyzed. Students will also investigate special relationships between lines in a plane, including lines that never intersect and lines that intersect at right angles, and examine their geometric and algebraic properties. In addition, students will study right triangles as geometric figures that connect angle measures to ratios of side lengths.
In this unit, students will explore transformations as functions that can change the position, orientation, and measurements of geometric figures. Students will examine congruent figures, recognizing that they have equal corresponding angle measures and equal distances between corresponding pairs of points. They will also investigate similar figures, understanding that corresponding angles are equal while corresponding distances are proportional. In addition, students will study circles and learn that the geometry of a circle is determined by its radius, which defines its size and related measurements.
In this unit, students will explore how the measurements of two- and three-dimensional figures are connected to their structure. Students will examine how the area of a figure depends on its height and cross-sectional widths, and how the volume of a solid depends on its height and cross-sectional areas. They will use these relationships to analyze and compare geometric figures and solids. Students will also study spheres, recognizing that the geometry of a sphere is determined by its radius, which defines its size and related measurements.
