In this unit, students will read and discuss classic stories while strengthening foundational reading and writing skills. Students will review short and long vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, alternate spellings, and syllables with -le. Students will also work with concrete and abstract nouns, regular and irregular verbs, and adjectives. Through reading and discussion, students will analyze characters, perspective, point of view, plot, sequence, theme, and key vocabulary. In writing, students will draft, revise, edit, and publish an opinion paragraph.

In this unit, students will learn how animals are classified, including vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals. Students will strengthen word study skills by reviewing suffixes and root words, applying prefixes, and alphabetizing words to the second and third letter. Students will also develop their understanding of sentence structure, parts of speech, subject pronouns, antecedents, object pronouns, and key vocabulary. In writing, students will plan, draft, revise, and edit an informative paragraph.

In this unit, students will read, discuss, and write poetry while learning about key poetry elements. Students will build vocabulary, identify and apply features of poetry, and use textual evidence to analyze poems. Students will also learn to identify and use reciprocal pronouns. In writing, students will draft an opinion paragraph and create an original poem.

In this unit, students will learn about ancient Rome while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Students will identify the point of view, discuss the main ideas and key details, and determine the moral or lesson of a story. Students will review r-controlled vowels, learn spelling patterns for the /ee/ sound, and apply suffixes such as -er, -or, -y, -al, -ist, and -ian. Students will also build an understanding of subject-verb agreement, correct verb tenses, and key vocabulary. In writing, students will draft, revise, and edit an opinion essay.

In this unit, students will learn about the solar system while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Students will compare and contrast ideas, identify cause and effect in texts, and build key vocabulary. Students will also practice dictionary skills using guide words, review spelling patterns, apply suffixes to unfamiliar words, and learn about singular and plural possessive nouns. In writing, students will use quotation marks in dialogue and write informative paragraphs about the life of an astronaut.

In this unit, students will learn about Native American regions and cultures while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, research, and writing skills. Students will identify cause-and-effect relationships in texts and use technology to conduct research and build background knowledge about local Native American tribes. Students will review spelling patterns, study possessive nouns and pronouns, and examine how suffixes change the meaning of adjectives and abstract nouns. Students will also strengthen dictionary skills by using entry words, defining key vocabulary, and understanding homographs. In writing, students will use linking words and phrases to connect facts, definitions, and details within a paragraph.

In this unit, students will participate in a novel study while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Students will analyze characters by identifying internal traits, explaining how characters’ actions affect the sequence of events, and recounting key events using temporal words. Students will also use a glossary to determine the meaning of words and phrases, expand sentences with conjunctions and question words, and practice punctuating dialogue correctly. In writing, students will plan, draft, revise, edit, publish, and present a fictional narrative.

In this unit, students will explore science concepts while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Students will use a KWL chart to organize information, build key vocabulary, and develop well-structured paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting details, a concluding sentence, and a title. Students will also practice pluralizing regular and irregular nouns, creating sentences with correct subject-verb agreement, identifying and using pronouns, and studying prefixes such as dis-, mis-, un-, non-, re-, and pre-. In writing, students will write letters connected to the unit topic.

In this unit, students will learn about jazz while strengthening reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Students will build key vocabulary, determine the meaning of words in context, and review simple and compound sentences. Through reading and discussion, students will identify key ideas by evaluating details in a text and explaining the author’s purpose. In writing, students will compose a well-organized and focused informational essay.
