Ceramics 2

In this unit, students will be introduced to the potter’s wheel and how to center clay on the wheel. Students will also review handbuilding skills from Ceramics 1 as well as routines, safety, and procedures. 

In this unit, students will create a wheel-thrown cylinder, trim a foot, and apply a pulled handle.  Students will also create a hand-built mug of their own design, exploring various intermediate handbuilding skills and methods.

In this unit, students will learn how to create a wheel-thrown form that is shaped using a rib and collared.  Students will also create a large hand-built vessel of their own design that incorporates two or more handbuilding techniques. 

In this unit, students will create a variety of wheel-thrown forms or hand-built forms that will be used to explore a variety of ways to treat the surface of a clay form.  This may include, but is not limited to: sgraffito, colored slip, and colored clay inlay or bubble and marbling glazes.

In this unit, students will learn how to model a hollow clay sculpture using wheel-throwing techniques, hand-built techniques, or a combination of both.   

In this unit, students will reflect on their artwork from the semester and identify an area for improvement or growth. Students will plan and create a final project that demonstrates stronger skills, revised techniques, or new learning. Students will document their progress through sketches, photographs, and written reflections in their portfolios.
