Don't Worry Darling

Don't Worry Darling is a psychological mystery and thriller film set in the 1950s. The film stars Jack and Alice Chambers played by Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, who live an ideal life during that time period, in a perfect, ideal community called Victory. Victory is an experimental community; while the women stay at home as housewives, the husbands go to work on classified research. After various suspicious events, Alice’s suspicion and questioning of Victory grows leading her to do crazy things.

Much controversy, tension, and drama has surrounded this film. It first began when Shia LeBoouf, who has many allegations against him, was casted to play Jack Chambers prior to Styles taking over the role. Director Olivia Wilde, had claimed to have fired LaBeouf, but he came forward to say that it was on his own terms that he left the film. Some other controversies that have circulated the internet include the unprofessionalism in the production of the film which is rumored to have resulted in Pugh being distant from the film and having a tense relationship with Wilde, and the romantic relationship between WIlde and Styles. A commercial rumor that has turned into a joke is in regards to Styles being accused of spitting on Chris Pine, who plays Frank, the leader of Victory, at the Venice International Film Festival. The drama surrounding the film could be a movie in itself, but I wouldn’t recommend allowing it to discourage anyone from watching the film.

All drama aside, as a fan of both Styles and Pugh, I was beyond excited to watch this movie. I can truthfully say that I went into the movie with very minimal expectations that weren’t too high. I”m glad I did because although I enjoyed the movie, it was nothing too special. I loved the setting and the overall vibe of the film. The music and costumes were to love. Throughout the movie, I felt on edge and my interest was drawn the whole time. However, there were parts to the film that I felt needed more detail. I picked up on some plot holes but It’s difficult to expand on that without spoiling the movie. Giving the benefit of the doubt, the lack of detail and plot holes could’ve been intentional, with the point being to leave aspects of the movie open to interpretation for the audience. Personally though, I wasn’t a fan of the lack of explanation and detail. Contrary to popular belief, I didn’t see much wrong with the acting. The whole cast gave a good performance; I do have to admit that Florence Pugh carried the film with her talent. I do think that Dont Worry Darling isn’t for everyone, but I would recommend giving it a chance in watching it. Released on September 23rd, the film is still in theaters today!
