Jing Wang -- December 18th
The holidays give you a bountiful amount of time to…Do what exactly? Do the winter homework that was assigned from the 50 AP’s you take? Resume the hobbies you left on pause because you had to study for tests and finals? Stress about what to buy your extended family members for Christmas? While winter break allows you to do all those things, it also grants you the privilege to binge all the Chinese and Korean dramas you want; if you want to take that route, there are some amazing Chinese dramas out there with genres ranging from adventure to romance to sci-fi. In an effort to not misguide you, I watch romance most of the time, so my recommendations will be in the romance genre.
1.Hidden Love
Genre: Romance, Youth, Age Gap
Drama Cast: Zhao Lusi, Chen Zheyuan, Ma Qingyun
Where to Watch: Youtube, Netflix
My best friend’s brother is the one for me? Well how about, my brother’s best friend is the one for me? Sang Zhi (Zhao Lusi) has had a crush on her brother’s best friend Duan Jiaxu (Chen Zheyuan) since she was a teenager. Now that they’re at the same university, will she finally have a chance? Or will Duan Jiaxu view her as a little sister forever?
* I loved the cute and bubbly vibe of this drama, and the age gap was addressed pretty well.
2. Love Game in Eastern Fantasy
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Isekai (time travel), Xianxia
Drama Cast: Yu Shuxin (better known as Esther Yu), Ding Yuxi
Where to Watch: Youtube, Netflix, Rakuten Viki
In a classic isekai trope, our female lead Ling Miaomiao (Yu Shuxin) is transported into a book she read by her favorite author. She finds herself in the body of the evil 2nd FL, and there’s quests she has to fulfill before she can go back to the real world. Will her determination to return to reality be enough? Or will she fail at the last challenge of getting Mu Sheng (Ding Yuxi) to fall in love with her?
* This was a drama my sister started watching, but I gradually became invested and fell for the characters. While the concept is nothing new, I loved the chemistry between the two leads and the many plot twists!
3. The Romance of Tiger and Rose
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Isekai (time travel)
Drama Cast: Zhao Lusi, Ding Yuxi
Where to Watch: Youtube, Netflix, Rakuten Viki
Chen Xiaoqian (Zhao Lusi), a young screenwriter, falls sick as she’s working on her script and wakes up as a character in her story…Only the character she ends up as dies in episode three of her script in the hands of her newly wed husband Prince Han Shuo (Ding Yuxi). Armed with the knowledge of her impending death, Xiaoqian is determined to survive the novel and go back home.
* Haha, I didn’t realize the leads were the same as the others. Anyways, this is a funny and lighthearted watch with tons of cute moments between the leads. I recommend it for a quick laugh or a weekend binge!
4. When I Fly Towards You
Genre: Romance, Youth
Drama Cast: Zhang Miaoyi, Zhou Yiran
Where to Watch: Youtube, Netflix, Rakuten Viki
Su Zaizai (Zhang Miaoyi) starts off high school with a romantic chance encounter with Zhang Lurang (Zhou Yiran) in the rain. She finds herself drawn to him, but his cold demeanor makes it hard for her to approach him. Will her endless optimism eventually melt his cold exterior?
* I love a straightforward story with little to no misunderstandings and cute characters. This story is so wholesome and charming!
5. Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Genre: Romance, Youth, College
Drama Cast: Xing Fei, Lin Yi, Tang Xiaotian
Where to Watch: Youtube, Netflix, Rakuten Viki
Si Tu Mo (Xing Fei) is on the brink of graduation and doesn’t know what to do when she accidentally moves in with Gu Weiyi (Lin Yi), her mother’s friend’s child. Thus begins the slow daily life between the two leads filled with sparks and comical moments.
* This drama is endearing and filled with scenes that are bound to make you and your family laugh! The slow pacing might not be for everybody, but I personally liked seeing the daily interactions between the leads and the chill vibe of it all.
